The Five Powertrain Types, Defined
BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) — no combustion engine at all, runs entirely on battery power, plugs in to recharge. Best fit: markets with reliable home or public charging and moderate climate. Zero tailpipe emissions, lowest running cost per km, but range and charging speed depend entirely on grid access.
PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) — a combustion engine paired with a mid-sized battery (typically 15-35 kWh) that plugs in and covers daily driving on electricity alone, with the engine taking over for longer trips. Best fit: markets where charging exists but isn't universal — buyers get electric commuting most days with zero range anxiety on a road trip.
EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) — drives like a BEV day-to-day (100% electric drive, no mechanical connection from engine to wheels), but carries a small combustion engine that only generates electricity to extend range once the battery runs low. Best fit: cold climates and markets with limited charging — buyers get a genuinely electric driving experience with none of the range anxiety.
