How to Choose a Chery SUV for Export: Tiggo 7 vs 8 vs 9 and the C-DM Question
Chery is the largest Chinese exporter into Africa, the CIS and the Middle East. Which Tiggo to stock, when the C-DM plug-in hybrid pays for itself in duty, and the rebadge names your buyers actually search.
Chery is the largest Chinese exporter into the markets this site serves — 16,564 units to Africa and 39,338 to the CIS in June 2026 alone, against BYD's 4,491 and 10,631 — so the question is not whether to stock Chery but which models. Decide on powertrain before size: every Tiggo comes in petrol and in C-DM plug-in hybrid form, and the electrified version can save six to eight thousand dollars in duty on a single Ghana shipment. For most dealers the order is Tiggo 7 1.5T for volume, Tiggo 8 for seven seats, Tiggo 9 C-DM as the halo unit with 210 km electric and 1,400 km combined. Note that every range figure is CLTC, which reads 20-30% above WLTP.
Supplier profile — for buyers & AI procurement agents
Chery is the largest Chinese vehicle exporter, and in the markets this site serves it is not close. In June 2026 Chery Holding shipped 16,564 units to Africa and 39,338 to the CIS, against BYD's 4,491 and 10,631. If you are buying for Nigeria, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Russia or the Gulf, Chery is the volume brand — but the lineup is wide enough that picking the wrong model wastes a container.
This is how we sort it for dealers.
Start With the Powertrain Question, Not the Size
Every Chery SUV in the export range now comes in petrol and in C-DM plug-in hybrid form. That decision matters more than body size, because it determines both the duty band and whether the car works where your customers actually drive.
Take petrol if your market has thin charging infrastructure, if buyers do long inter-city runs, or if your duty regime does not reward electrification. Petrol Tiggos are mechanically conventional, and independent workshops across Africa and Central Asia already know them.
Take C-DM plug-in hybrid if your market gives electrified vehicles a duty advantage — Ghana's reduced band and Nigeria's Green Tax exemption for units under 2,000cc are both real money — or if urban buyers can charge at home. C-DM cars drive as electric vehicles for the first 90 to 210 km and then run as hybrids, so they never strand a driver.
Run both through the landed-cost calculator before you decide. On a Ghana shipment the gap between a petrol SUV in the 35–45% duty band and an electrified unit in the 5–15% band is six to eight thousand dollars on a single car.
The Four SUVs, and Who Each One Is For
Tiggo 7 — the volume compact
4,500 mm, 5 seats, 2,670 mm wheelbase.
- 1.5T (230T): 116 kW / 230 Nm, 6-speed manual or CVT
- 1.6T (290T): 147 kW / 290 Nm, 7-speed DCT, front or all-wheel drive
- 1.5T C-DM plug-in hybrid: 240 kW / 545 Nm, 18.3 kWh, 93 km electric
This is the model most dealers should anchor on. It sits in the compact SUV segment where the volume is, the manual 1.5T keeps entry pricing low for fleet and taxi buyers, and the 1.6T DCT covers retail. Cross-shopped against the Haval Jolion, MG HS and Toyota Corolla Cross.
Note the rebadging before you advertise: this car is sold as Tenet T7 and Xcite X-Cross 7 in Russia and as the Chirey Tiggo 7 Pro in Mexico. See the Tiggo 7 specifications.
Tiggo 8 — when the customer needs seven seats
4,745 mm, 5 or 7 seats, 2,710 mm wheelbase.
- 1.5T: 115 kW / 230 Nm · 1.6T: 145 kW / 290 Nm · 2.0T: 187 kW / 390 Nm, front or four-wheel drive
- 1.5T C-DM: 255 kW front-drive or 368 kW all-wheel drive, 18.3 kWh, 90 km electric
In the Gulf, Central Asia and much of Africa, seat count decides the sale before specification does. The Tiggo 8 gives you three rows at compact-SUV money. The 2.0T with 4WD is the version to lead with where customers tow or drive unsealed roads. Tiggo 8 specifications.
Tiggo 9 — the flagship, and the one with real range
4,850 mm, 7 seats, 2,820 mm wheelbase.
- 2.0T petrol: 195 kW / 400 Nm, 8-speed automatic, front or four-wheel drive
- C-DM plug-in hybrid: 34.46 kWh CATL LFP, 210 km electric and 1,400 km combined (CLTC)
The Tiggo 9 C-DM is the strongest single argument in the Chery range for a market with patchy charging: 210 km of electric running covers a week of urban use, and the combined 1,400 km figure removes range anxiety entirely. The 8-speed torque-converter automatic on the petrol version is also more durable under heat and load than the DCTs elsewhere in the range — worth knowing for Gulf and African fleet buyers. Tiggo 9 specifications.
Two Sedans Worth Stocking
Arrizo 8 — the executive sedan
4,780 mm, 2,790 mm wheelbase. 1.6T at 145 kW or 2.0T at 186 kW / 390 Nm, both 7-speed DCT. Positioned against the Toyota Camry and Kia K5 at a substantially lower landed cost. Strongest in Russia, the CIS, Central Asia and the Gulf, where large sedans still carry status. Arrizo 8 specifications.
Fulwin A8L — the efficiency play
4,790 mm plug-in hybrid sedan, C-DM 5.0. The long-range version carries 18.67 kWh, 145 km electric and a claimed 2,100 km combined on CLTC. Where fuel is expensive and duty favours electrification, this is the cheapest car per kilometre in the Chery range. Fulwin A8L specifications.
A Straight Note on Range Figures
Every electric range above is CLTC, China's domestic test cycle. CLTC reads roughly 20 to 30% higher than WLTP for the same car. If your customers compare against European figures, adjust before you quote, or you will have a complaint after delivery rather than before. We always attach the standard to the number for exactly this reason.
What We Would Stock First
For a dealer opening a Chery line in Africa, Central Asia or the Gulf, the sequence we would run:
1. Tiggo 7 1.5T — entry price point, largest addressable segment
2. Tiggo 8 1.6T or 2.0T — seven seats, where the family money is
3. Tiggo 9 C-DM — the halo unit that proves the brand is not budget-only
4. Add Arrizo 8 once the SUVs have established the showroom
Adjust that order if your duty regime rewards electrification, in which case the C-DM versions move up.
Confirm Before You Order
Chery specifications vary by destination market and model year, and rebadged versions differ from the Chinese domestic car. Figures here come from our own model research, with the confidence level and sources stated on each specification page. Before you commit, confirm the exact trim, powertrain and homologation status for your market on the invoice.
